Enjoyment Breeds Quality
If you like your work, you'll do it better.
Working on the walls together is a great way to help us better enjoy our work. Of course, we probably were not hired just so that we could enjoy ourselves—unless we’re comedians or chocolate taste-testers. We are responsible for delivering value; to our bosses, our organizations, our customers, our teams, etc. But why not do it in the most enjoyable way possible?
If you like your work, you’ll do it better!
We humans are social creatures who typically derive joy from healthy interactions with others. Even we introverts enjoy the company of others in the correct dosage. Sharing ideas, building off of other people’s ideas, knowing your voice matters, feeling the energy of the whole group—these are just a few of the intangible benefits we enjoy when we collaborate together in a physical space (or even a digital-physical space like an online whiteboard).
Collaborating with others just plain feels good.
Have you ever been in a workshop and when it was over you felt energized and excited and somebody said something like “that was awesome! but it’s back to work now, I guess?” As if the workshop was a break from “real work.”
Me too!
Have you ever been in a meeting where someone spent two full hours painfully stepping through a Powerpoint presentation? Or one of those meetings where a few people with the strongest personalities fought over the microphone, figuratively speaking, for the whole 90 minutes? Did you walk away from those gatherings excited or energized?
Me neither!
When we enjoy our work, we bring ourselves more fully to it. This makes for better collaboration and that makes for higher quality output.
